Exploration can be a great way to make isk when not much else is going on, though it does require having a few skills at decent level to make the best use of it.

Method

  1. Use a cargo scanner to check the contents of the containers to determine which ones are worth hacking and which are best left alone
  2. Go for any T2 BPC, Decryptors, and Datacores from datasites. Most anything found in the Parts and Materials cans from Relic sites are going to be worth keeping.

Is this worth keeping?

If you're not sure if something is worth keeping and your cargohold is getting full:

  1. Display cargo hold in detailed list mode
  2. Look at Volume column to find what is taking the most space
  3. Highlight the item by clicking on it
  4. The bottom right of the cargohold window will display an ISK amount
  5. Do this for all items that are >1m3 per unit.
  6. Once you decide what isn't worth keeping you can jet can those items as you leave the site.

As a rule of thumb, most items found through exploration that are 1 or more m3 per unit aren't worth enough isk to keep.

Sites

The sites that most explorers stick to are the Data and Relic sites as those are hacking sites. There are no rats in these sites either which is helpful and in fact the only thing to really worry about are non-blues in system. Guns aren't necessary on ships to run these sites, although some people do put a small gun in their extra high slot to encourage other explorers to go away if they pop into the site they are running.

The Gas Clouds and Ore sites tend to have rats, more in the former than the later but aren't worth running unless you are a "professional" miner/harvester.

Ordered lists denote the order in which to grab cans

Data Sites

  1. Data: BPCs, Skillbooks
  2. Parts: Decryptors, Datacores, R&D Materials (Energy Cells, Current Amplifier, etc)
  3. Material: R&D Materials, Rogue Drone Components (in drone space)
  4. Equipment
  5. Scrap

Relic Sites

  1. Parts: Salvage, Material, Salvage
  2. Material
  3. Equipment
  4. Data: BPCs, Skillbooks
  5. Scrap

Gas Cloud Sites

  • Contains rats (aren't worth running unless you are a "professional" miner/harvester)
  • Data: Skillbooks, Booster Reactions, Flavor Items (Angel Cartel Dust, Pillaging 101, etc)
  • Equipment: Implants, GasCloudHarvesters

Ore Sites

  • Contains rats (aren't worth running unless you are a "professional" miner/harvester)

Combat Sites

  • Filled with rats
  • There are loads of different combat sites and some are worth more than others, some times you can sell a combat site location to ratters for a split of the loot.

Wormhole Sites

  • Wormholes are just that, wormholes. Sometimes they go to wormhole space. Sometimes they go to K-Space (known space [High/Low/Null sec]). There are resources on the internet to help figure out where the wormhole goes.
